One goal down, a lot more to go - Mt Oberon Summit walk.

Saturday, March 19, 2011

So it has been a while since I have 'blogged' (feels like a confession).  I have been living in Struggle Town a bit lately.  I went away to QLD on a family holiday and I will admit that I wasn't the best, and put on 1.3kgs.   I have lost that weight and more, but I am finding it extremely difficult to keep motivated.  I tried on pair of jeans the other day that I haven't  been able to fit into for about six years, and they fit.  You would think that would be motivation enough.  I was motivated for a whole day.

I am finding the eating a bore, and get overwhelmed thinking that this is my way of life now.  My goal seems so unachievable.  I know I should only think of short term goals, but that doesn't work for me.  The fact is i still need to lose around 30 odd kilos and knowing how hard it has been to lose 18 kgs (since October)  I don't know if I have it in me to lose the next 30.

Cleaning out the pantry

So I don't know if I am going into holiday mode (going away for a week on Saturday) but last couple of days I have been starting to crave those naughty foods again.  It started on Monday with my son's 3rd birthday as he wanted Pizza Planet for dinner (yes he watches too much Toy Story) so I got pizza for dinner on Monday which I had worked into my calorie allowance.  I also had ice-cream cake which wasn't in the allowance.  So that was the first taste of the forbidden food.

Last night I got home from a meeting and had the biggest craving for cake.  I searched the house and couldn't find anything to eat because I had cleaned the pantry out of all the crap as Michelle suggests.  I even said to my husband that I was nearly tempted to just make a cake so I could give into my craving.  I possibly would have done that in the past but ended up just having a slice of toast with vegemite on it which worked into my calorie allowance so I hadn't broken it for the day.

Moral of the story;  Do your pre-season tasks because there is a reason why Mish says to do it.  I would have definitely broken my healthy eating last night, but because the pantry was cleaned out I didn't have an option.

Couch 2 five k's

Today I embarked on the couch 2 five km training program otherwise known as c25k.  It's a program designed to get you, as the title suggests from the couch to running five kilometers in 12 weeks.  I have chosen to do the treadmill option.  I was happy with how it went, put the treadmill on an incline and did the full half an hour.  That is a first for me.  I usually run on and off for a little then walk the rest.  All up burnt 362 calories.

This evening I then went for my usual walk with my sisters in the hot humid weather and by the time I got back my legs felt so heavy, I was so hot and sweaty but 400 calories gone.  When I got home I had missed majority of The Biggest Loser and thought well I am not going to watch it now, I will just watch it online tomorrow.  So outside I went and skipped with my skipping rope up and down the drive way burning another 100 calories in 15 minutes.  I knew skipping was hard but that is great calorie burn in such a short time.  Will be doing that again very soon.  So total calories burnt for the day = 862 and that doesn't even include my BMR.  I am on fire.  Loving this exercise....

New Goals

The last week I have been putting in a couple big (well big to me) bike rides.  I hadn't been on the bike for a couple weeks, last time when I 'hit the wall' and needed a lift home lol.  A couple weeks rest has given me my mojo back on the bike.  I have missed being on the bike so much...

This week I did my 20 km ride and felt really good afterward so I thought it was time to up the anti so to speak.  In the car I got to track my ride and note down the kilometres.  34km ride that was my next ambition.  The following day, back on the bike I got.  About 3/4 of the way into the ride I had the option to either turn left and take the lazy way home or turn right and go further and complete my 34km.  My back, neck and butt were killing me but thought to myself JFDI Jenny, you will feel so much better if you do.  Don't regret taking the lazy way out.  So I turned right and completed the ride.  On this ride, I ride past my sister's farm, and yes I used to stop in for a drink and rest before tackling the two huge hills back into town.  This time I didn't.  I rode straight past rode up the two hills, (the last hill to tackle is always the hardest) and home.  I got home sore and cold but feeling so good mentally that I had achieved what I set out to do and burnt off 1300 calories.

So I have set myself a new goal and maybe I am a bit ambitious, but the next goal is to do the 'round the bay in a day' bike ride in Melbourne in October.  So the endurance bike training for me is starting and my goal is to at least do the 100km ride but would really love to do the 210km ride.  Time will tell.....

Weigh in Wednesday

So I haven't been on here for a week as I have been very busy with doing assessments for school and life in general...

Weigh in day and I lost 1.6 kgs.  I am very pleased with that and so much better than last week.  I think I found the reason why last week wasn't the best.  I am putting it down to dehydration.  With all the exercise I have been doing and losing so much fluid through sweat I aren't replenishing enough, so lesson learnt for me..

Some may have noticed that my weight loss tracker is now at a 5.9kgs loss.  No I haven't had an amazing weight loss in a week (I wish), I have actually been following Mish's book since the 2nd of January, and that is my loss since then.    A friend suggested that I should put my weight loss since then instead of when pre- season started.  I should have taken measurements  as well but thought I would leave that until the final pre-season task.

Started the day bad but ended on a high....

Weigh in today.. Got onto the scales feeling good then bam put on 100gms.  How the hell does that happen??  I was feeling so good, had eaten really well all week the previous day had burned off 1200 calories each day, and did interval running, mountain climbs etc etc.  So how do I put on 100gms.  You might be saying "It was only 100gms it isn't a lot", but it is when you are trying to lose weight.  It really screws around with your head.

So I had my little 'hissy' with myself ate two bertie beetles, then put it down to the fact that, it has been hot so it is possibly dehydration/water retention.  Well that is my story now and I am sticking with it.

So apart from the bertie beetles (which after looking were only 50 cals each and ended up working them into my allowable calories) I sorted myself out, ate perfectly for the rest of the day, then went out tonight and did my first step class.

It was such a great class.  Worked off 860 calories and i think 2 liters  of water and I didn't realise that you seriously work every part of the body.  I was a bit un co-ordinated in some parts but I think I handled it well. Even the instructor and fellow stepper said I did a great job.  So now I think I am a spin junkie and a step junkie.

My First Spin Class

Well I faced my fears and excuses and did my first spin class tonight. I also found out that I had a couple of more excuses up my sleeve as well which I didn't think about until tonight.   My excuses for tonight
1. Was too hot (and it was)
2. I will sweat too much (which I did)
3. I will be the unfittest (is that a word?) and the fattest.  (I was and that was a new excuse for me)
4. I don't want to go by myself. (Another new one).

In the end I thought who really cares.  At least I am getting off my butt and doing something, they have to give me credit for that.

The class was hard work, and I didn't really know what to expect, but it was great.  My body feels so good now, and really feel as though I worked every inch of my body.  The class went for 50 minutes and I burnt 840 calories. Woo Hoo.. The only problem I have now is I can't wait until the next session which is another week away.  I don't want to wait that long to do some serious exercise again so think I will do a step class on Wednesday night.. No stopping me now.
